Christopher Pennant


Chris

Chris is my second brother, 2 years younger than me. Pyers and I tended to tease him calling him things like "Butterfly Bill" or "Himalayan Harry", depending on his activity or enthusiasm of the moment. After Charterhouse, he read Law at Churchill College, Cambridge and obtained honours in his Law Society final exam. After working for several firms of solicitors in the South of England and now married to Nicky Osborne, he moved to settle in Newport where he is now a partner with Everett, Tomlin, Lloyd and Pratt. They are both involved with the church and Chris is a lay reader. They have four children, Julian, Alison and Mary and Lucy who are identical twins. In Spring 2006 Chris wrote:

 

Costa Rica

We fulfilled a long-standing ambition by visiting a tropical rainforest. Costa Rica seemed the easiest placve to do it. So we spent a memorable few days there, seeing face-to-face wonderful creatures that otherwise you only see on the TV screen - a colony of leaf eating ants,mowing a neat clipped highway across the grass so that what seemed like a fleet of tiny sailing boats could cruise in long procession - poisonous blue jeans tree frogs as small as a thumb nail - enormous cicadas in our bedroom - huge towering trees buttressed all round - and rain, enough to raise the water level in the area a foot overnight. Actually we were lucky in having blue skies most of the time. Standing on the watershed between two oceans, I was able to quote the only complete poem I managed to learn at school (Keats):

Then felt I like some watcher of the skies
When a new planet swims into his ken;
Or like stout Cortez, when with eagle eyes
He stared at the Pacific --- and all his men
Look'd at each other with wild surmise ---
Silent upon a peak in Darien.
